Arkansas District & City Court Clerks Association

April, 2006

Hello everyone,

Welcome everyone to Fort Smith and to the annual Arkansas District and City Court Clerk’s program. I believe the Certification Committee has done an outstanding job developing this program for us today. I want to thank them once again for their hard work and the time they put into planning these programs for our association. There will be several break-out sessions on Friday morning, so you will be able to choose which class you want to attend. Just a reminder to all of you newer clerks, this will be the only opportunity to attend the New Clerks orientation program this year. So make sure you make it to one of these classes on Friday. Chief Clerks please make sure you and your deputies have all taken this class if they intend to work toward certification. For all the new Chief Clerks, this is a class that is required to become a Certified District Court Clerk and it is best to go ahead and get this class out of the way the first time it is offered. There is a notebook on the registration table that has a list of everyone’s hours and notations as to whether or not a clerk has taken the orientation class. Please check your records and fell free to contact myself or Vickie Asher, from Hot Springs, if you have any questions.

I want to give a special “THANK YOU” to the Clerk’s office here in Fort Smith. They are hosting a cookout at the river front Thursday evening and I hope all of you have a chance to attend. This year has surpassed any other year for the number of clerks registering for this meeting. At last count, we have 294 clerks registered and the number keeps growing.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say how much I have enjoyed serving as your president these last two years. It has been a special honor to hold this office and work for such a wonderful group of people. Thank you for all your support and help.

Once again, welcome to the meeting and I hope everyone has a great time!

Dena Ross

President ARDCCCA

We were all sorry to hear about the loss of Irene’s father-in- law in February. Here are a couple of “thank you” notes sent to the newsletter by Dena Ross.

Dear Dena and the ADCCCA,
Thank you so much for providing the lovely meat and cheese tray, chips and dips, and bread. It was so nice to be able to feed the “Cross Clan” without having to cook.

Sincerely,
The Family of Jim Cross

Dear Dena & ADCCCA,
Words can’t describe the feelings Casey & I had had when Joyce walked in the front door with all the food you girls sent us. All I could do was cry. Your love, care and generosity touched both of our hearts in our time of sorrow. Thank you so very much for your kindness. I’m proud to serve with some of the finest women (and men) in the state.

Love,
Irene & Casey

FROM THE EDITORS DESK

About these meetings, the camaraderie is wonderful and the hospitality rooms are great, but every time I think about the tremendous amount of work and planning that is put forth just to pull off one of these meetings successfully, I am frankly a little awestruck. We all owe a great big “thank you very much” to everyone who works so hard for us clerks. We know that you are not doing this for yourselves, but for the association, so that we can learn and become better and more proficient clerks.

I am so very sorry to have to miss this meeting and the seeing of all of you again, but someone has to “mind the store”. The next meeting will be a whole year away, and it seems like a long, long time. If anyone makes an audio or video of this meeting I would love to review it.

For giggles I would like to start a new column and I need your help. It is called “PET PEEVES”. Send me your pet peeves signed or not, and I will put them into print.

BUMPER STICKERS

I drive the limit. If you don’t like it, call a cop.

Now that you are kissing my bumper, do you want to get married?

Hang up and Drive.

DID YOU KNOW?

Pigs were among the first Europeans to set hoof in the New World? Columbus brought eight porkers on his second trip across the Atlantic in 1493.

Corn is an agricultural product used in the manufacture of biodegradable plastics?

Young dandelion leaves contain more Vitamin A than any other edible plant? The carrot ranks second.

A family of four eats 5,000 lbs of food in one year?

Cocklebur, a pesky weed, inspired the invention of Velcro?

Legume is a plant that can make nitrogen from the atmosphere?

The largest cut-flower crop in the United States is chrysanthemums?

The average American eats 27 lbs of cheese a year?

The most popular cheese produced in the United States is American cheddar cheese?

The history of cheese goes as far back as 4000 B. C.?

RESUMES

Someone very clever wrote these about resumes, and I thought I would share them with you. It goes like this:

My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned---couldn’t concentrate.

Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the axe.

After that, I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn’t suited for it. Mainly because it was a so-so job.

Next I tried working in a muffler factory but that was exhausting.

I wanted to be a barber, but I just couldn’t cut it.

Then I tried to be a chef---figured it would add a little spice to my life, but I just didn’t have the thyme.

Finally, I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn’t cut the mustard.

My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn’t noteworthy.

I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.

I got a job at a zoo feeding giraffes, but I was fired because I wasn’t up to it.

Next, I found being an electrician interesting. But the work was shocking.

I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income.

My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.

WHY

Why do banks charge a fee on “insufficient funds” when they know there is not enough?

Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Why doesn’t glue stick to the bottle?

Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? I must confess that I had never even thought about this one. What would he have used to get rid of his beard? Now, what makes a man grow hair on his face?

Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him?

Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Whose idea was it to put an “S” in the word “lisp”?

If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white?

Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give vacuum one more chance?

How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures?

FAVORITE: The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends--- if they’re okay, then it’s you.

PARTING SHOTS

April 15, is when you’re haunted by the Ghost of Earnings Past.

What you see is what you get --- except in pre-packaged strawberries.

The display of status symbols is usually a result of low self-esteem. The self-confident person can afford to project a modest image.
